Guayusa – The most caffeinated tea leaf in the world
If coca was first celebrated, then tabooed, politicized, and monopolized, and kola was first industrialized, then synthesized, and eventually removed entirely for cost reasons, then guayusa was simply overlooked for a long time.
Guayusa is an evergreen tree found exclusively in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Botanically, it belongs to the holly family and bears the name Ilex guayusa. Unlike classic tea, guayusa does not come from Camellia sinensis. It is an independent plant with its own history, culture, and functional profile.
Ghwy-you-sa, as the Kichwa Indigenous people pronounce it, means “the night watcher.” Archaeological findings show that guayusa was already cultivated by the Kichwa more than 1,000 years ago. No surprise, considering that with up to 7.6 percent caffeine content, guayusa is the most caffeine-rich tea leaf in the world.
More than just an Energy Source
Guayusa naturally contains high amounts of caffeine. It clearly surpasses traditional green tea and coffee. Yet its effect is often described differently from coffee or isolated caffeine found in energy drinks and conventional cola.
The reason lies in its plant matrix. In addition to caffeine, guayusa contains theobromine, L-theanine, and a wide range of polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, and antioxidant plant compounds. Theobromine acts more gently and lasts longer than caffeine alone. In combination with L-theanine, it may support sustained alertness often described as clear, stable, and focused, without the abrupt highs and crashes many people associate with coffee.
Guayusa is therefore not an isolated stimulant. It is a natural energy tea leaf.
The Morning Plant of the Amazon
For the Indigenous Kichwa communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon, guayusa is not a trend product. It is part of daily life. Traditionally, families wake before sunrise and drink a strong guayusa infusion together. This ritual, known as “Guayusa Upina,” is not only about wakefulness. It is a social space. Dreams are shared, the day is planned, community bonds are strengthened, and awareness is sharpened.
Guayusa is not understood there as an energy drink. It is concentration in leaf form. Unlike many other caffeinated plants, guayusa is remarkably mild in taste. It is smooth, slightly sweet, and hardly bitter. This is partly due to its relatively low tannin content compared to classic tea.
While kola brings structural bitterness, guayusa provides a calm, harmonious base.
Sustainability in the Rainforest
Guayusa is not grown on monoculture plantations. Traditionally, it is cultivated in so-called chakra systems, biodiverse agroforestry structures in the Amazon region. There, it grows among banana plants, medicinal herbs, cacao, and native trees. This cultivation method preserves biodiversity and protects the rainforest instead of displacing it. Guayusa is therefore not only functionally interesting, but also ecologically relevant. It is a plant that thrives in the shade, both ecologically and metaphorically.
In addition, guayusa provides the Kichwa with a sustainable source of income, as an alternative to tourism, but more importantly as an alternative to logging and gold mining, which unfortunately remain among the largest income sources after tourism and cacao cultivation.
Why Guayusa feels different from coffee
Coffee delivers rapidly absorbed caffeine. Isolated caffeine in cola and energy drinks acts in a targeted and abrupt way. Guayusa works within a natural plant structure. The interaction of caffeine, theobromine, and secondary plant compounds creates a more balanced stimulation.
Many people report mental clarity without inner restlessness. From a scientific perspective, the difference lies less in the caffeine molecule itself and more in the way it is absorbed within the plant context. Guayusa is not a substitute for coffee. It is a different kind of energy.
The Third Plant in the circle

An archaeological discovery in Bolivia, dated to around 500 CE, documented a shamanic burial containing coca leaves and other psychoactive plants, including guayusa. The find suggests early trade networks between the Andes and the Amazon and shows that Cocayusa once existed before.

If one looks at the history of coca and the history of the kola nut, a pattern becomes visible. The same pattern appears clearly when looking at coca and guayusa. Leaves, Indigenous knowledge, and enormous potential waiting to be fully rediscovered.

Coca Blätter aus Kolumbien
Unser Ursprung beginnt nicht im Labor und nicht in einer Fabrik. Er beginnt dort, wo Coca seit Jahrhunderten wächst. In den Höhen Kolumbiens.
Wir arbeiten mit indigenen Nasa Gemeinschaften in der Region Cauca zusammen. In den Ausläufern der Anden, zwischen Nebel, Regen und intensiver Sonne, wächst Coca unter Bedingungen, die man nicht kopieren kann. Genau dort gehört diese Pflanze hin. Nicht in die Hände des Imperiums und nicht in die Hände der Kartelle.
Der Anbau liegt vollständig bei den indigenen Nasa Gemeinschaften. Keine anonyme Massenware, keine industrielle Monokultur, keine entseelte Skalierung. Stattdessen kleine Parzellen, echtes Wissen und Familien, die seit Generationen mit dieser Pflanze leben.
Auch die Ernte folgt diesem Prinzip. Die Blätter werden von Hand geerntet, mit Respekt für die Pflanze und mit dem Blick auf Beständigkeit statt schnellen Ertrag. So bleibt der Coca Strauch über Jahre hinweg kräftig und lebendig.
Nach der Ernte beginnt ein streng geregelter Prozess innerhalb der indigenen Territorien. Erst nach der Dekokainisierung wird das Extrakt an uns freigegeben. Dabei werden die Alkaloide, die Kokain erzeugen, gezielt entfernt. Was bleibt, ist ein aromatischer Pflanzenextrakt, der den Charakter von Coca bewahrt, aber nicht mehr die berauschende Wirkung des Kokain hat.
Genau das ist für uns entscheidend. Echte Herkunft, klare Regeln und eine Lieferkette, die man nicht verstecken muss. Sondern verstehen kann. Coca ist für uns kein beliebiger Rohstoff. Coca ist eine Pflanze mit Geschichte, kultureller Bedeutung und einer Tiefe, die weit über das hinausgeht, was das Imperium daraus gemacht hat.

Unsere Guayusa Blätter stammen aus unserer langjährigen Zusammenarbeit im Projekt Matchachin mit indigenen Kichwa Gemeinschaften. In Regionen wie der Napo Region ist Guayusa seit Jahrhunderten Teil des Lebens. Nicht als Modepflanze, nicht als Marketingidee, sondern als fester Bestandteil des Alltags.
Genau das macht den Unterschied. Guayusa wächst dort nicht in leeren Monokulturen und nicht auf gesichtslosen Plantagen. Sie wächst eingebettet in den Wald, zwischen anderen Pflanzen, in lebendigen Chakra Gärten der Familien. Diese traditionellen Waldgärten verbinden Nahrung, Heilpflanzen und Nutzpflanzen in einem System, das nicht gegen die Natur arbeitet, sondern mit ihr.
Auch die Ernte folgt diesem Gedanken. Im Morgengrauen, wenn der Wald langsam erwacht, werden die Blätter von Hand gepflückt. Der Guayusa Baum wird dabei nicht zerstört, sondern kann über viele Jahre hinweg weiterwachsen und immer wieder beerntet werden. So bleibt Guayusa kräftig, lebendig und Teil eines natürlichen Kreislaufs.
Direkt nach der Ernte beginnt die schonende Verarbeitung. Die Blätter werden gewelkt und anschließend bei niedrigen Temperaturen sorgfältig getrocknet. Nicht möglichst schnell, sondern möglichst gut. Denn genau diese Ruhe und Sorgfalt bewahren den weichen, klaren Geschmack und die natürliche Kraft, die Guayusa so besonders machen.
